Tucker, Bellevue Hill
When a cafe’s been trading for nearly two decades like Tucker has, you know they’re doing something right. And this Bellevue Hill staple has good, wholesome fare down pat – whether you opt for the fresh, seasonal oat bircher, a three-cheese toastie with relish and zucchini pickle, or a warming turmeric chicken salad with slaw, peanuts and coriander. Tucker is a personal favourite for Byron Rose, R&J’s MD, too. “I love it for the coffee – a double shot low tide extra hot,” he says. “They know me well, Ari the barrister is legend and the food is always fresh. The dish I can’t help but order is the caramel slice – Ari knows to give me the corner piece that’s slightly burnt and crunchy. Yum.”
Indigo, Double Bay
Impeccably-plated food and a European alfresco vibe makes this popular Double Bay spot a winner – and a personal favourite for Natalia Burton, our receptionist and property management assistant. “I love the relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, the friendly service, and the outdoor seating that’s perfect for people-watching,” says Natalia. “It has a real community feel. I can never go past the avocado toast with poached eggs – my all-time favourite breakfast!”
Blackwood, Bondi
Blackwood started off in Cronulla before expanding to Bondi in 2022 – and its spacious interiors and alfresco dining have made it a much-loved local haunt. Whether you rock up for brekkie, lunch or a late arvo bevvie, you can always expect a cool vibe and delicious seasonal food, says R&J’s head of property management, Ben O’Brien. “I love the atmosphere – it’s always pumping,” he says. “I can’t go past the Blueberry and Ricotta Hotcakes.” We’re with you, Ben. Nom!
A Man and His Monkey Cafe, Clovelly
This Clovelly favourite has a cute name and a huge following – perhaps thanks to menu items like the croissant and butter pudding muffin, avocado and garden peas smash, or Labnuska. It’s also a fave for R&J’s EA, Tia Fon. “I love the staff; they’re so friendly and the cafe itself is super cosy, with homely vibes. The food is also to die for – such yummy cookies and coffee, and I love that you can buy homemade dishes to take home,” she says. “The Shakshuka is my go-to dish – it’s so good.”
Speedos, Bondi
Saying you serve up the world’s most Instagrammable food is a bold claim – but Speedos actually nail it, with gorgeous plates that’ll give any punter food envy. Plus, you’ve got the golden sands and crystal waters of Bondi Beach opposite while you nosh your breakkie, brunch or lunch. Speedos is the number one pick for R&J’s buyer’s agent Michael Cohen, thanks to its great atmosphere. “It has a mix of locals and tourists – and offers fantastic service, great coffee and generous portions. My pick is the ‘big breaky’ – it’s name says it all. Eggs the way you like them, beef sausages, relish, hash browns, avocado, halloumi, roasted tomato, smoked salmon, turkish toast and spreads. You definitely don’t need lunch after this!”
Bonython Cafe, Paddington
A little oasis in the middle of Paddo, this Eastern Suburbs neighbourhood cafe is big on plants, famous for its lush, dog-friendly courtyard and of course, its tasty fare (which might range from a mouthwatering chicken caesar sarnie to simple but delicious mushies on toast). Not surprisingly, it gets a big thumbs up from R&J buyer’s agent Alberto Fascetti, who pops in regularly. “It feels like you’re in the jungle,” he says. “I love the spaghetti alle vongole, it’s coastal Italy on a plate.”
